Not sure which treatment is right for you? A gentle guide to choosing

Walking into a wellbeing centre for the first time can feel a little daunting, especially when there is a whole list of treatments to choose from. Massage, reflexology, reiki, chiropractic, yoga. If you are not quite sure where to begin, you are in very good company. Most people who come to Soma are not certain what they need, only that they would like to feel a little better in some way.

The reassuring part is that there is no wrong choice. Every practitioner here is experienced, independent and used to helping people find their feet. Think of this as a gentle starting point: a simple way to match how you are feeling to the treatment most likely to help.

Start with how you are feeling, not the treatment name

It is easy to get lost in the names of therapies. A simpler place to begin is with your own body, and how things have felt lately. On our treatments page you can browse by what you would like help with rather than by treatment, which most people find far easier.

Broadly, people tend to arrive with one of four things in mind:

  • Relaxation and stress. You feel wound up, tired, or simply in need of a pause.
  • Muscle tension and recovery. Something aches, feels tight, or is holding you back.
  • Emotional wellbeing. You are carrying something, and would like a little space to soften.
  • General health and balance. You just want to look after yourself.

Hold whichever feels closest in mind as you read on.

The treatments, in plain terms

Here is a short, honest introduction to what we offer, and what each one tends to suit.

Biodynamic and somatic massage

A gentle, deeply therapeutic approach that works with your nervous system rather than against it. If you feel frazzled, overwhelmed, or stuck in a constant state of alert, this is a lovely place to start. Our founder, Layla, specialises in this work, with over twenty years of experience helping the body soften and settle.
Best for: stress, nervous tension, feeling permanently switched on.

Deep tissue and sports massage

Firmer, more focused work for muscles that are tight, overworked or recovering. Ideal if you are active, sit at a desk all day, or tend to carry tension in your shoulders, back or legs. Mo blends sports and deep tissue massage with a calmer, restorative touch.
Best for: knots, tight muscles, recovery, sporting niggles.

Reflexology

A calming treatment that works through points on the feet, thought to connect with the rest of the body. Many people find it wonderfully relaxing, and it can be a gentle option if you would rather stay fully clothed.
Best for: relaxation, stress, feeling generally out of sorts.

Reiki

A gentle, restful energy treatment. You stay clothed and simply rest while the practitioner works. People often describe it as deeply peaceful, and it can be an easy way in if hands-on massage feels like a lot.
Best for: emotional wellbeing, deep rest, feeling depleted.

Pregnancy and postnatal massage

Specialist, nurturing massage adapted for pregnancy and the months that follow. Zainab offers midwife-led pregnancy and postnatal treatments, so you are in very safe hands.
Best for: comfort and rest during and after pregnancy.

Chiropractic

A more structural approach, focused on the spine and joints. Helpful for a specific, persistent complaint, or ongoing back or neck trouble. Mark is our chiropractor.
Best for: back and neck pain, joint issues, structural niggles.

Yoga and holistic therapies

Alongside the treatments above, you will also find yoga and pranic healing at Soma. These are gentler, whole-person practices that support calm and balance over time, rather than fixing one thing in one visit.
Best for: general wellbeing, and building a regular practice.

Still not sure? A simple rule of thumb

If you have read this far and still feel undecided, that is completely fine. As a rough guide:

  • Mostly want to switch off and relax? Try reflexology, reiki, or a gentle massage.
  • Something specific aches or feels tight? Try deep tissue or sports massage.
  • Carrying stress through your whole body? Try biodynamic or somatic bodywork.
  • Living with a persistent structural complaint? Chiropractic may be the place to start.

And if you would still like a steer, you are always welcome to send us a message and we will point you in the right direction.

You book directly with your practitioner

One thing that makes Soma a little different is that every practitioner here is independent and self-employed. You book directly with the person you would like to see, and build a relationship with them over time. Each practitioner profile explains their training, their approach, and how to get in touch or book. It is a small thing, but it keeps your care personal.

Come and see us

Soma is an independent wellbeing centre in the heart of the Norwich Lanes, bringing a range of trusted practitioners together under one calm roof. Whether you know exactly what you need, or are still finding your way, you are very welcome.

We would love to welcome you.

A few questions people often ask

I have never had a treatment before. Is that okay?

Completely. Most people are trying something for the first time. Just let your practitioner know and they will talk you through everything.

How often should I come?

There is no set rule. Some people come for a one-off treat, others build it into their routine. Your practitioner can suggest what might suit you.
