About the treatment

What is Pregnancy & Postnatal Massage?

Pregnancy and postnatal massage is adapted for a changing body. Positioning, pressure and the areas worked on are all adjusted for comfort, so you can lie on your side, supported by cushions, rather than on your front.

During pregnancy, many people use massage to rest, ease the everyday aches of carrying a baby and take some quiet time for themselves. After birth, it can be a chance to recover, reconnect with your body and be looked after for a while.

At Soma you can choose between two practitioners. Zainab Molina is a midwife who offers pregnancy, birth preparation and postnatal recovery massage, blending massage, lymphatic drainage and gentle bodywork. Emma Foster offers holistic massage for women at every stage of life, with a pregnancy and postnatal specialism.

Questions

Questions about Pregnancy & Postnatal Massage

When in pregnancy can I have a massage?
Many practitioners prefer to start after the first trimester, but this varies. Get in touch with your practitioner, who will talk it through with you.
Is pregnancy massage safe?
When it is given by a practitioner trained in pregnancy massage, it is adapted to be comfortable and appropriate for your stage. If you have any complications, check with your midwife or GP first.
How soon after birth can I have a postnatal massage?
This depends on your birth and recovery. Your practitioner can advise, and after a caesarean it is usually best to wait until you have been given the all clear.
Do I need to lie on my front?
No. You will usually lie on your side, well supported with cushions, so you stay comfortable throughout.
