Counselling in Norwich

Counselling is time set aside to talk things through with someone trained to listen. Many people come when life feels heavy, when something has shifted and they are not sure how to carry it, or when they simply want to understand themselves better.

About the treatment

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a conversation with a purpose. You bring whatever is on your mind, and a trained counsellor helps you look at it more clearly, without judgement and without being told what to do.

The counselling offered at Soma is person-centred. That approach rests on a simple idea: you are the expert on your own life. Rather than working from a diagnosis or a set programme, your counsellor offers an empathetic and genuinely collaborative relationship, and you set the direction and the pace.

It is not advice, and it is not a clinical assessment. It is a confidential space where you can say things out loud, sometimes for the first time, and work out what they mean to you.

Questions

Questions about Counselling

What is the difference between counselling and therapy?
In everyday use the words overlap, and most people use them interchangeably. What matters more is the approach a practitioner trains in and whether you feel comfortable with them.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. You can get in touch directly, and there is no waiting list to join.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. Counselling is confidential, within the ethical framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Your counsellor will explain the few legal limits to that at the start.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no set number. Some people come for a handful of sessions around a specific difficulty, others continue for longer. It is something you decide together as you go.
What if I do not know where to start?
That is a very common way to arrive, and it is not a problem. You do not need to have organised your thoughts beforehand.
Can I have sessions online?
Yes. Online video sessions and face-to-face sessions at Soma are both available, and some people move between the two depending on the week.
