About the treatment

What is Biodynamic Massage?

Biodynamic massage was developed in the 1950s by Gerda Boyesen, a psychologist and physiotherapist who was interested in how stress and emotion are held in the body. Rather than following a set routine, the practitioner pays close attention to how your body responds and adapts the touch as the session unfolds.

The pace is usually slower than a typical massage. Touch can be light or deeper, and there may be moments of stillness. Traditionally, biodynamic practitioners also listen to the sounds of digestion with a stethoscope, as a sign of the body relaxing and settling.

At Soma, biodynamic massage is offered by Layla Evans, our founder, who has over 20 years of experience in bodywork and works closely with the nervous system. Sessions can include somatic bodywork and are shaped around how you are feeling on the day.

People are often drawn to it when a regular massage feels like it only scratches the surface, or when they want a calmer, more attentive kind of care.

  4. A few quiet minutes at the end before you get up

Questions

Questions about Biodynamic Massage

How is biodynamic massage different from a regular massage?
A regular massage usually follows a set routine focused on the muscles. Biodynamic massage is more responsive: the pace, depth and focus change with how your body reacts, with attention to the nervous system as well as muscle tension.
Do I need to talk about my feelings?
No. There is space to share if you would like to, but many people simply enjoy the session in quiet. You are always in charge of what you share.
Is it suitable if I have never had a massage before?
Yes. The approach is unhurried, and your practitioner will check in with you throughout so you feel comfortable.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no set number. Some people come for a single session and others book regularly. Your practitioner can suggest what might suit you after your first visit.
